This song is somewhat of a departure for Annette. In some respects it is just a sign of the times. It was a hit that everyone just had to record and so it was natural for Annette to include it also. Although it is somewhat of a departure from her usual upbeat, up tempo songs. It is really quite morose. However, it can be taken two ways. It could be taken as someone who is desperately poor and is contemplating suicide which is probably as the writer meant it to be. The other explanation is that it is just a spoiled rich kid who is sad and feeling sorry for herself. For someone who is desperately poor, worrying about not having anyone to talk to is not really that important! If you are extremely poor and hungry you are not really too concerned about who loves you! You are more concerned about your next meal! At any rate, this song is more about recording the latest tear jerker of the day for commercial purposes than for any statement. However, another element not to be overlooked is the fact that if you are in love, and out of your element, then anywhere you are, you are going to be sad whether you are rich or poor. So the song can be interpreted in a number of different ways. So enjoy, and envision Annette sitting at the wharf in some big city singing this little song.

Big City Blues

Just think, tonight is Thanksgiving
Everyone is going somewhere
nobody knows that I'm living
they pass me by
I wonder why
I'm all alone every night
how I moan and how I fight
those Big City Blues
I walk for miles
place to place
No one smiles to help me
chase those Big City Blues
I'm like a little tot
who needs a lot
of tenderness and care
All I've got
is a lot of sorrow and despair
Won't someone please
talk to me
Don't refuse
Hear my plea
and help me loose those
Big City Blues
Each evening at 6 pm
Lights light
and I look at them
That some nice person
will feed me
greet me
Before I know it is 12 o'clock
I feel like jumping right off the dock
because I haven't found a person
to chill me
to fill me
No one ever comes near me
I'm all alone every night
how I moan and how I fight
those Big City Blues
I walk for miles
place to place
No one smiles to help me
chase those Big City Blues
Won't someone please
talk to me
Don't refuse
Hear my plea
and help me loose those
Big City Blues
