This song is quite sad even morose.  Annette sings it with a tone of ultimate despair even with suicidal tones.  The musicians tone it down a bit to add to the sad tone of the whole melody.  Even when she is having some fun in the summer, she says "summer will pass away".  Even though the song is rather sad.  It is not boring.  Annette and the musicians convey a sense of despair of lingering of what once was.  She had her song, but now it is gone and yet the melody lingers on.
