This is a constant theme among songwriters and Annette takes this one up here.  Woman is lonely because her man has left.  He hasn't divorced (if they were even married) and hasn't said when or if he is coming back.  She still loves her man, so starts singing this song to her man.  The sheet music reference from 1919 is even more morose.  It shows  what happens to the little ones when the man runs off.  Thankfully, in this piece there is no mention of any children.

Daddy Won't You Please Come Home

Daddy Come Home (by Irving Berlin-1919)

When night in creeping
and I should be sleeping in bed
if you are peepin you'd find that I'm weepin instead
my lovin daddy left his baby again
said her would come back
but he didn't say when
night after night
I'm crying

Daddy won't you please come home
Daddy won't you please come home
I'm so lonesome
no one can fill that vacant chair
home isn't home
when your not there
no need to knock
the door is open for you
please daddy

Even the clock
is tickin
Daddy won't you please come home
Daddy do you have to roam
so very long
there's lots of other new sheik
who would like to be sheikin
haven't slip yet but I'm liable to weaken
Daddy, daddy won't you please come home

Please Daddy
even the clock
keeps tickin
Daddy won't you please come home
Daddy do you have to roam
so very long
there's lots of other new sheik
who would like to be a sheikin
Haven't slipped yet
but I'm liable to weaken
Daddy, Daddy won't you please come home

That's All!
